Film Magazine Cover Layout Sketch

I followed the basics of a film magazine when planning the layout. I knew I wanted the main image center of the page with sell lines and buttons on either side. Traditionally with all film magazines, I also put the masthead at the top and the main cover line or in this case the title of the Film "Say your Prayers"

 I had some ideas on what the film poster should look like by creating a layout with the basic on what should be included. I knew I needed to conform to the basic of having the film's title, actor's names, character's main image, background in a simialr setting to the film, credits, production and social logos.

Next, I decided to sketch out an idea I had been thinking about without any real development to the design and realised it was too complicated to execute. For instance, I needed a high angle shot of a church in a dark, night time background. First, I had no equipment for such an angle and the location which was St. Emmanuel's church was closed off at the times I wished to take the photo.

I decided to change the look of the film magazine cover from the inital design. This is because I felt that the colour of red from previous did not make a strong impact on the overall look and feel of the magazine cover. My previous front cover had a similar look to my poster with a church in the background and a ray of light shining from the back.

This final front cover has the background much darker to help headlines and main images of the characters stand more. 

Storyboards

Here are our Storyboards for our trailer Say Your Prayers. During some filming sessions, we decided to remove other scenes or single shots that weren't needed in the trailer therefore not everything on our storyboards were made.

 When we were trying to come up with ideas, we would communicate them through rough sketches thinking about angle, camera movement and action of characters. These sketches continued until until we agreed on a scene or single shot.

Continuously changing music from an upbeat orchestral music to a crescendo.

To focus on voiceovers the music gets quieter.

Film magazine Initial Process

When making the film magazine, I knew I had to include all main characters since I only included Kerenza in the Film poster. Like many film magazines, I've seen those that included all main casts. I started off with the background of the church featured in one of the shots in the trailer: St Emmanuel's (like my film poster).

The photos of the main characters was inspired by another Horror film magazine featuring Daniel Radcliffe looking far in the distance in a thoughtful yet cautious emotion. I interpreted this image like he was looking at something never seen before hence the supernatural.

Similar to my poster, I wanted to bring the element of light into the film magazine. The light symbolises having to search for this supernatural activity and having to put light upon something they cannot identify.
